Iodine! Why you Need it…

Importance of Iodine

In many American’s diets, iodine is not a regularly consumed nutrient. As a result we are seeing a surge of health challenges arrive and thrive. To combat challenges like thinning hair, hypothyroidism, fibrocystic diseases, low energy and other thyroid related challenges I recommend the consumption of 12.5 milligrams of iodine daily. Your thyroid gland is the storehouse for iodine, and when a person’s body is deficient in iodine other items that are antagonistic to healthy body function take up residence, including bromine, chlorine and fluorine. If you begin a regimen which includes a large amount of iodine you will experience detoxification effects as your thyroid flushes out the negative elements and readies itself for the iodine it needs. To avoid an overwhelming detoxification effect on your body which can include flu-like symptoms a protocol that will allow you to gradually increase the amount of iodine you consume is in order. This protocol includes a low dose iodine product and then, at the graduated stage, high potency iodine products that will help you maintain healthy thyroid function.

Iodine is a trace element and an essential micronutrient. Almost 80 percent of the body’s iodine content resides in the thyroid gland where its sole function is to form part of the two important thyroid hormones – thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These hormones influence the rate of metabolism and are necessary for the regulation of normal growth and development. During our entire lifetime, we only require a little more than a teaspoonful of iodine, but since the body does not store iodine, we need to consume it regularly to support consistent thyroid hormone production. The body is able to absorb iodine in both the organic and inorganic state, both readily available in a normal, well-balanced diet. Iodine is found in iodized salt, water, oysters, fish, beef, pork, eggs, bread, dairy products, apples, cranberries, and many vegetables. As with many other nutrients, young adults and pregnant or lactating women may require somewhat greater iodine intake to support their nutritional needs.

Let’s talk about the two products I recommend:

Prolamine Iodine

How Prolamine Iodine keeps you healthy

Boosts serum iodine levels
Failure to eat a well balanced diet can result in loss of essential vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients, including iodine. Prolamine Iodine contains 3 mg of iodine per tablet to help your body maintain a healthy serum iodine level. Proalamine Iodine is most beneficial when used as a short-term mechanism to support serum iodine levels. In the long run, a well-balanced diet is the best way to maintain healthy levels of all nutrients, including iodine. †

Supports normal growth and development
The sole purpose for iodine in the body is to facilitate formation of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These hormones cannot be formed without it. Triiodothyronine is the hormone intimately involved in the regulation of normal growth and development, and it is produced from the metabolism of thyroxine, which contains four atoms of iodine per molecule. These two hormones help keep young bodies and minds growing and developing at a healthy rate. †

Supports a healthy metabolic rate
The thyroid hormones boost the rate at which the body’s cells use oxygen and organic molecules to produce energy and heat. They are directly and indirectly involved with the growth and maintenance of the skeletal and nervous systems. The thyroid hormones stimulate different types of cells to perform their specific functions, such as protein synthesis, water balance, and many other physiological processes. Without iodine, this would not be possible. †

High Potency Iodine/Potassium Iodide Supplement

Iodoral® is a Tablet form of Lugol solution and is available in 2 strengths

»  12.5mg/Tablet
»  50mg/Tablet

»  What makes Iodorol unique?

One 12.5 mg. tablet of Iodorol supplies an amount of total elemental iodine, comparable to the average daily intake of this essential element by mainland Japanese, a population with a very low prevalence of fibrocystic disease of the breast and breast cancer.

Iodine is an essential element. Although its main function is in the production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, other organs in the body have a need for iodine in order to function normally (4).

Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between low iodine intake and fibrocystic disease of the breast (FDB), both in women and laboratory animals (1,2). The minimum amount of iodine required for control and prevention of FDB is equivalent to 0.1mg/kg body weight/day. For example, for a 50 kg woman, the daily amount of iodine would be 5 mg. The thyroid gland needs iodide to function properly. The original study done 80 years ago to control goiter in adolescent girls used 9 mg iodide daily (3).

During the early 1900’s, the iodine/iodide solution called Lugol solution was used extensively, effectively and safely in medical practice, for both low activity and above normal activity of the thyroid gland (4). The recommended daily intake for iodine supplementation was 2 to 6 drops of Lugol solution containing 12.5 to 37.5 mg total iodide. That amount was mentioned as lately as 1995 in a book on Pharmaceutical Sciences (5). Several investigators have shown convincing evidence connecting inadequate iodine intake and breast cancer (6). Japanese women living in Japan consumed a daily average of 13.8 mg total elemental iodine and they experience one of the lowest prevalence (risk) for breast, ovarian and uterine cancer (6). In the 1960’s, one slice of bread in the USA contained the full RDA of 0.15 mg iodine. The risk for breast cancer was then 1 in 20 (7). Over the last 2 decades, iodine was replaced by bromine in the bread making process. Bromine blocks thyroid function and may interfere with the anticancer effect of iodine on the breast (4). Now, the risk for breast cancer is 1 in 8 and increasing 1% per year (7).

The RDA limits for vitamins and minerals were established after World War II. One of the last essential elements included in the RDA system was iodine, established in 1980 and confirmed in 1989 (8). The RDA for iodine was based on the amount of iodine/iodide needed to prevent goiter, extreme stupidity and hypothyroidism (9). The optimal requirement of the whole human body for iodine has never been studied. Therefore, the optimal amount of this element for physical and mental wellbeing is unknown. Based on demographic studies, the mainland Japanese consumed an average of 13.8 mg daily and they are one of the healthiest people on planet earth (6). Lugol solution is a time-tested preparation with a proven track record for over 150 years. Two drops contain 12.5 mg iodine/iodide, an amount very close to the 13.8 mg average intake of mainland Japanese.

»  Formulation

Administration of iodine/iodide in liquid solution is not very accurate, may stain clothing, has an unpleasant taste and causes gastric irritation. Iodoral® is a precisely quantified tablet form containing 5 mg iodine and 7.5 mg iodide as the potassium salt. To prevent gastric irritation, the iodine/iodide preparation was absorbed unto a colloidal silica excipient; and to eliminate the unpleasant taste of iodine, the tablets were coated with a thin film of pharmaceutical glaze (10).

»  Suggested Use

The suggested daily amount is 1-4 tablets/day as recommended by your physician. Work closely with your physician and natural healthcare provider while on the Iodoral® program. Report to your doctors any history of thyroid surgery and/or radiation, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto), and any previous problem with your thyroid. Before starting Iodoral®, your doctor will order blood tests for hematology, blood chemistry and thyroid functions. If you are taking thyroid hormones, let your physician know about it. Be aware that Iodoral® enhances the response of your body to thyroid hormones (4,6). Subjects on Iodoral® feel warmer in cold environments and that is expected. However, you will need to cut down the amount of thyroid hormones if you experience palpitation, anxiety, increased sweating and intolerance to heat. That is because Iodoral® decreases your need for thyroid hormones. Keep a record of what you observe while on Iodoral® and show it to your physician and natural healthcare provider.

To test whole body sufficiency for iodine, 4 tablets of Iodoral® are ingested, followed by 24 hr. urine collection. The more deficient a subject is in iodine, the more iodine is retained by the body and the least excreted in the urine. Sufficiency is achieved when 90% or more of the ingested amount is excreted in the urine. In most subjects tested, 3-4 tablets of Iodoral®/day were required to achieve whole body sufficiency within 3 months and the body retained approximately 1.5 gm iodine at sufficiency (4,8). The best response in patients with FDB was observed with ingestion of 2 tablets twice a day (8). Click Here to view or order an Iodine Loading test.

The Importance of Nutritional Counseling

Self diagnoses and treatment based solely on information found on the web or by word of mouth can be dangerous. For example, bodies can absorb up to a 300 percent difference in supplements, so a healthy dose for one, even a recommended dose on a package, can be toxic for another. Consultations are available to help you get the right supplements and the right dose for you. Once you begin the consultation process you will receive a complete supplement recommendation that will be tailored for your heath needs using expertise gained over 30 years in practice as a DC and NHD.

I recommend supplementation primarily with Standard Process brand products which are only legally available thru a doctor/patient relationship. If you find these products for sale on the internet; this is a violation of Standard Process guidelines. The products found on the internet are not guaranteed by Standard Process to have been stored properly and many are expired. Rocket Fuel in ALL Baby Formula – Did you read me? ALL!

DB here! I have followed toxicity for a long time. Percholate is a compound that is from rocket fuel. I know this may seem hard to believe but it is everywhere. Percolates biggest issue is the fact that beside being toxic and a burden to your life it is also stressful to your thyroid by being antagonistic to iodine. Read the following:

(Natural News) The CDC has conducted a study of infant formula products sold in the United States and shockingly found they were all contaminated with rocket fuel chemicals! Published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, these findings reveal that every single infant formula product tested was found to contain perchlorate. The highest levels were reportedly found in the cow’s milk formula products. How does perchlorate get into infant formula? It’s simple: It’s a contaminant in the water supply that’s given to dairy cows. Those cows, in turn, pass the perchlorate chemicals through their milk, and that milk is used to make infant formula that many (ignorant) parents still feed their babies. (Can you believe human mothers still feed their human babies milk made from bovine animals?) What’s a better alternative? First off, human breast milk is the obvious choice. But if that’s not available, goat’s milk infant formula is the next-best thing. (Check your local health food store for goat’s milk brands.) You can also read some recipes on home-made infant formula at the Dr. Weston Price Foundation http://www.westonaprice.org/childre…). Stop poisoning our babies! That rocket fuel chemicals are found in the water supply and, subsequently, infant formula is no surprise: Modern civilization is awash with toxic chemicals. Even breastfeeding may not avoid the issue, since virtually all human breast milk is also contaminated with perchlorate!  Check your water supply.   Read more by going to: http://www.naturalnews.com/025997.html

Household Cleaners Coming Clean…

DB here! I was reading the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and learned a few nuggets I wanted to pass on. (The WSJ is loaded with information that is very useful.) The whole economy is fueled by research and development of products. What is very interesting about today’s world is the fact the public is very astute, and manufacturers need to listen to the consumer because the manufacturers know they can take a huge hit in a matter of days caused by chatter on the internet and lose creditability.

The title of the article I read was “Household Products Come Clean”, what’s going on out there is the world of cleaning is high potency; lethal chemicals that can create harm and alter body physiology. I won’t make this a chemistry lesson, I will give you two chemicals to look for, and then send me a note if you find them in your products.

  • Monoethanolamine, this is found in detergents and all purpose cleaners. It is used in various products such as Mr. Clean Multi-Surface Antibacterial Cleaner made by Procter and Gamble, and Clorox’s Formula 409 All Purpose Cleaner. Studied have linked this chemical to occupational asthma. The article goes on to say the manufacturers say it is safe…yadda…yadda…yadda…. The real challenge is if you have a child with asthma.
  • Glycol ethers which have been linked to low fertility rates and low weight birth rates in laboratory animals.

I suggest you go to the American Cancer Society’s web site and look at environmental toxins. I encourage you to become more pro-active, and be AWARE of what you are using in your house especially if you have small children or you notice people have “runny noses” and just don’t feel good when you change a product.  I would suggest you may want to forward this blog on.

Don’t just ‘Show Me the Beef’, Tell Me What’s IN the Beef!

Should it be WHATS IN THE BEEF versus SHOW me the BEEF?

DB here! I just read an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal. There was a story on an imported cheese store in NYC that was concerned that the price of cheese from Europe was going to be more expensive because of a new tariff placed on the importing of cheese from the European Union. Do you want to know why? The US is/was retaliating against Europe’s refusal to import American Beef. Conventional American Beef is loaded with hormones and the Europeans do not want it. Guess who is eating eat? We are, let me qualify that; the uniformed public is; I do not eat it, I eat organic.

Do you get warm or hot in the evening after meals that have meat as a part of the dinner? If you do, and it is not uncommon it could be the chemicals in your steak or roast beef dinner. If you have tender breasts, a heavy menstrual flow, or if you are a male, and you have swelling in your prostate impairing urine flow – I would make the educated decision to go organic. The chemicals in the products you may be eating can cause an abundance of xenohormones. Organic animal tissue is the only way to go. Also, I would avoid FARM RAISED FISH. Yes you read that right. They use chemicals in fish food to color the flesh and anti-biotics to prevent the fish from getting infections. OK, so what do you do? Stop eating conventional meat, I would minimize going out to eat, where they use processed, tainted meat products. Eat at home, buy the right stuff. DB

“The Pill” – Birth Control Side Effects ending in Hysterectomy

Dysplasia of the Cervix is commonly precipitated by taking the Birth Control Pill

DB here!! I recently had a new patient come into the office; she was thirty three years old with two children. She is the owner of a business; her children are three and five years old. She was diagnosed with dysplasia which is abnormal cells in and around the cervix in her vaginal/uterus connection. She was on birth control pills for several years. She opted to have a few tests done, then because of some bleeding they took her uterus out. She did not have an opinion from anyone else. She came into the office because she knew I wrote a book on female hormones.

This is very serious and very common. She did not have any other female dysfunction. She did have cold hands and feet, constipation and diarrhea alternating. Her eyes were toxic looking with dark circles below. She was also told she had Raynaud’s, which is constriction of blood vessels with resulting cold hands.

OK, here is the issue, she may in fact have a low thyroid, a congested liver, but the real issue was the pill which threw her whole system off. Now the seriousness of the BLOG is we need to get her back on track with normal estrogen and progesterone. I will be doing a TSH, T3 and T4 to her, plus saliva testing to check her hormones. We will need to clean up her liver and get her bowels back in normal rhythm. I see this a lot in females. Ladies, if you have anyone on the pill and they get dysplasia, just do not run off and get a hysterectomy. I would encourage you to have a consultation with me, for sure get my Guide to Balancing Female Hormones, and watch the Hormone Videos on my site. This is very serious and unfortunately for this young lady she has the potential to have long term health challenges as a result of the hysterectomy, something you may be able to avoid. DB

Torpedoes of Death = Donuts

DB here!! I had a busy day today; I was a guest on a radio program in 850 KOA AM with Rick Barber at 6am EST. We talked from items from soup to nuts. He liked my line “torpedoes of death”, those are donuts. Donuts create havoc on the gall bladder. The gall bladder is critical for optimal fat metabolism. Go to this site and see if you can upload the pod cast.

http://www.koaradio.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=overnight.xml

I was then on WTBQ, where I talked about Celtic Sea Salt. One nugget, maybe you will like to read. Men who have “bowed legs” often need minerals. Lack of minerals can be an issue. Leg cramps are common with lack of minerals. Go to my web site, either today or tomorrow, and register for my videos, and watch the one on Celtic Sea Salt. Download the outline. You will learn a lot. Only five percent of BP is caused by salt. There is a lot to learn. You can go to You Tube and type in Dr. Bob DeMaria discusses Celtic Sea Salt®. I will put the outline here for you to watch. Let me know how you like it. You know what; we have adjusted the price on Celtic Sea Salt. It is very important.

After I did the two radio programs, I spoke at Bendix a major World Wide company that is known by there air brakes. They were shocked to find out about “torpedoes of death”. I had several mature gentlemen come up to me after, and say they were very excited to learn they could lower their cholesterol and get off their drugs – most of them were suffering from the side effects with pain. Do you have high cholesterol; if yes go and read Dr. Bob’s ABC’s on my home page. I spoke for an hour. Great fun will go back next month. Thank you all the Bendix employees who were there today. Do you have a company that would like an excellent program, and then you may want to go to my home page, and link to the speaker form.

I had a workshop at noon. I have the notes and told you above how to see it until it gets posted. I can tell you Celtic Sea Salt® is critical for long term health. Let me know how you like it. DB

Celtic Sea Salt: Dr. Bob DeMaria

  • The history of salt. It has been used as a form of legal trade for thousands of years. Roman soldiers were paid with salt, “solarium argentums” which became the English word Salary.
  • Hippocrates used salt, infections, clearing congestion. It was said that w/o salt there would be no life.
  • The Union army used strategies in the Civil War to stop the South
  • Salt was used as a preservative before refrigeration. People moved to areas of salt, Cincinnati, Detroit and Cleveland. Utah
  • The Difference between Refined Salt and Unrefined Salt. Unrefined salt has over 80 minerals and elements. Refined salt has two Na and Cl
  • Sulfuric acid and chlorine in the form of brine are added to unrefined salt to take the other minerals out, which are classified as impurities. They then add anti-caking agents including sodium ferrocyanide, ammonium citrate and aluminum silicate. Dextrose is used as a stabilizer so that iodide will stay in the salt.
  • Refined salt is “lifeless”. Why you may ask? It can stay on the shelf longer. It is cleaner looking.
  • pH is effected by salt. We tend to live an acidic environment. Refined salt does not promote normal pH. Unrefined salt adds minerals helping normalize you pH. pH is a measure of acid (vinegar) or alkaline (baking soda)
  • The low salt diet does not promote normal blood pressure a low salt diet may help only 5% which is minimal. Chiropractic adjustment helps 17 points.
  • Could be salt sensitive. Kidney issues. Not common.
  • A low salt diet has been shown to cause multiple nutritional deficiencies, including depletion of minerals such as calcium and magnesium as well as potassium and B-vitamins.
  • Low salt diets often result in altered adrenal gland hormones, by increasing them, like adrenaline, which can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, raising BP and causing a heart attack. The purpose of Beta blockers is to stop these hormones. Could the low salt diet be the real problem? Insulin tends to increase on a low salt diet.
  • Elevated insulin has been associated diabetes, cysts on the ovaries and obesity.
  • A low salt diet can result in the increase of toxins in the body. Bromine.
  • Dr. Lepore ND, has found the systolic pressure will stabilize with Na and the diastolic pressure with K+
  • The amount of unrefined salt is directly related to the amount of water you consume. The more water you consume, the more unrefined salt you should ingest. Use ¼ teaspoon of unrefined salt for every quart of water ingested. Using it for cooking should not interfere with your BP.
  • The human body has 250 grams of salt in it a baby has 14 grams
  • Water and salt are necessary for metabolism, detoxification and transportation of nutrients as well as optimal functioning of the hormonal, nervous and immune systems.
  • Nerve impulses are mediated by sodium ions.
  • Sodium regulates the electrical charges through out the body. Seizure disorders can result with altered sodium levels. Seizures can be caused by diet soda and refined salt. They may go away by eliminating refined salt and add unrefined salt.
  • The brain needs magnesium, calcium and potassium to send messages.
  • Salt and water work together. Many today are dehydrated. Items with caffeine can accelerate water loss. You can have brain fog, which is very common w/o pure water and the proper minerals in unrefined salt.
  • Water generates energy. Two oceans in the body, one in the cells and one outside of the cells. The outside has WBC’s, RBC’s, vitamins and minerals. The inside ocean has all the cell organelles. Your body needs water and salt to carry the outside ocean water to the kidneys to be eliminated by the body.
  • Unrefined salt nourishes both oceans. Na is on the outside and the K is on the inside. Magnesium and calcium help the two oceans communicate with each other. They are not in unrefined salt.
  • When you do not have the right minerals you kidneys will start holding on to salt in the body.
  • Prolonged healthy salt deprivation will result to kidney problems. What will happen minerals will be pulled from inside the cells to balance the outside ocean?
  • You cannot drink enough water because the body needs minerals. As the cells become more dehydrated, waste products build up in the cells and you have acidosis.
  • The consequences of acidosis would include; cancer, auto immune disorders, and arthritis as well as accelerated aging.
  • The Adrenal glands are affected by salt. In a resting state, the adrenal glands are responsible for maintaining adequate energy levels, blood sugar control, blood pressure control, muscle strength and much more via the secretion of other hormones including: Aldosterone, cortisol, DHEA, Estrogen, Pregnenolone, Progesterone and Testosterone.
  • Adrenal gland exhaustion include fatigue, poor immune function, cancer, thyroid disorders, obesity, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, auto immune disorders and other chronic illness.
  • The Adrenal glands need Mg, it calms you.
  • Diuretics do not get to the cause. Do not stop w/o talking to your Dr.
  • Adrenal exhaustion results because of

1. The lack of unrefined salt in our diet

2. The excess use of refined salt in our diet.

ENERGY Energy energy… How low sodium diets can deplete your vigor

Hello this is Dr. Bob with a Tip for You!!

Last night on the Tele Workshop call I discussed energy.  I have been talking about it for a week or so now on the tips.  I have so many patients that come into the office exhausted.

I have discovered that one of the many reasons people do not have enough energy is because they are on a low salt diet. You will want to watch  for a video posted on Celtic Sea Salt on Thursday, at www.druglessdoctor.com.

To make matters more complicated they are using refined salt, loaded with chemicals.  I encourage our patients to use a unrefined product, we generally suggest Celtic Sea Salt.  You can use up to one fourth teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt with every quart of water you drink.  By the way it is helpful for digestive distress. You can still sprinkle some Celtic Sea Salt on your food.

I know many of you reading this are tired; I would avoid zinc depleting foods like grains and soy.  Wheat can be an issue for some of you.

One of the tests that we do in the office is the Adrenal Stress Index, (ASI).  This test will show use if you are sensitive to wheat and gluten which can be an energy zapper.  Ladies, any type of hormone replacement therapy can be an issue, by increasing copper and depleting zinc.

Do you wear sunglasses?  If you do, it may be a sign that your adrenals are exhausted.  The adrenal glands and thyroid are critical for optimal energy.

And finally, is your liver up to par?  Your liver is the main organ that helps your body create fuel, and also eliminates the extra estrogen that is common in people with low energy from high copper.  The copper depletes zinc, which is needed to make insulin.  You may want to think about getting the Detoxification book.

By the way, we have four books available that you can have emailed to you, which saves shipping.

You can read the book right on your computer.  What a great way to learn and have the information at your finger tips.   Enjoy all the nuggets and new videos and Blog nuggets on my web page at www.druglessdoctor.com.

One last point, I have a video that you will want to watch on High Fructose Corn Syrup, you will really be shocked by the information, especially the nuggets on fatty liver.

We had a lot of fun at Channel 8. The program will be on my site very soon. Well, on Friday February 13th night we had an awesome group that was at Barnes and Noble Book Store for my book discussion. A lot of questions! One interesting query was, “Dr. Bob, how can you help fibromyalgia?” Now, you would think that would be a strange question for a book signing and workshop on SEX and ROMANCE. She apparently was having pain, I am sure the misery she was in, definitely prevented her from having an intimate relationship with her spouse.

Can I tell you- a leading cause of fibromyalgia pain would include; sugar stressing the adrenal glands, to much citrus creating an alkaline pH, lack of Vitamin D creating bone tissue pain and even lack of iodine.

Iodine is needed for thyroid function; the thyroid and para-thyroid are involved in calcium movement. We had another person comment who has a low thyroid; she wanted to know if swimming could affect her thyroid? Swimming can lower the iodine in ones body because of chemicals in the water – bromine, fluorine and chlorine.

Deb and I spoke at our church on Sunday, the audience was very receptive on the message of Sex and Romance, much to our surprise we sold several ADHD books!! We had much discussion on adult ADHD. When one has ADHD as a child, it is does not generally go away as an adult unless there is a change. One such person was shocked to learn that dairy may be a factor in ADHD. I explained that an abundance of dairy sabotages the formation of a fat in the brain called DHA. I would encourage you to go to back to  www.druglessdoctor.com, and watch the video on ADHD. ADHD translates into depression as time goes on. Depression and those taking anti-depressants have challenges with the emotions and physical aspects of sexual intimacy. If you are depressed or have ADHD you may want to fill out a HEALTH SURVEY, to see if you have a nutritional cause of the problem. DB

PS: You really need to watch this news video on a study done on High Fructose Corn Syrup. Pass this on. It is VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!! Corn Syrup is WORSE for you than table sugar! <<<Click to watch.
