Iodine! Why you Need it…

Importance of Iodine

In many American’s diets, iodine is not a regularly consumed nutrient. As a result we are seeing a surge of health challenges arrive and thrive. To combat challenges like thinning hair, hypothyroidism, fibrocystic diseases, low energy and other thyroid related challenges I recommend the consumption of 12.5 milligrams of iodine daily. Your thyroid gland is the storehouse for iodine, and when a person’s body is deficient in iodine other items that are antagonistic to healthy body function take up residence, including bromine, chlorine and fluorine. If you begin a regimen which includes a large amount of iodine you will experience detoxification effects as your thyroid flushes out the negative elements and readies itself for the iodine it needs. To avoid an overwhelming detoxification effect on your body which can include flu-like symptoms a protocol that will allow you to gradually increase the amount of iodine you consume is in order. This protocol includes a low dose iodine product and then, at the graduated stage, high potency iodine products that will help you maintain healthy thyroid function.

Iodine is a trace element and an essential micronutrient. Almost 80 percent of the body’s iodine content resides in the thyroid gland where its sole function is to form part of the two important thyroid hormones – thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These hormones influence the rate of metabolism and are necessary for the regulation of normal growth and development. During our entire lifetime, we only require a little more than a teaspoonful of iodine, but since the body does not store iodine, we need to consume it regularly to support consistent thyroid hormone production. The body is able to absorb iodine in both the organic and inorganic state, both readily available in a normal, well-balanced diet. Iodine is found in iodized salt, water, oysters, fish, beef, pork, eggs, bread, dairy products, apples, cranberries, and many vegetables. As with many other nutrients, young adults and pregnant or lactating women may require somewhat greater iodine intake to support their nutritional needs.

Let’s talk about the two products I recommend:

Prolamine Iodine

How Prolamine Iodine keeps you healthy

Boosts serum iodine levels
Failure to eat a well balanced diet can result in loss of essential vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients, including iodine. Prolamine Iodine contains 3 mg of iodine per tablet to help your body maintain a healthy serum iodine level. Proalamine Iodine is most beneficial when used as a short-term mechanism to support serum iodine levels. In the long run, a well-balanced diet is the best way to maintain healthy levels of all nutrients, including iodine. †

Supports normal growth and development
The sole purpose for iodine in the body is to facilitate formation of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These hormones cannot be formed without it. Triiodothyronine is the hormone intimately involved in the regulation of normal growth and development, and it is produced from the metabolism of thyroxine, which contains four atoms of iodine per molecule. These two hormones help keep young bodies and minds growing and developing at a healthy rate. †

Supports a healthy metabolic rate
The thyroid hormones boost the rate at which the body’s cells use oxygen and organic molecules to produce energy and heat. They are directly and indirectly involved with the growth and maintenance of the skeletal and nervous systems. The thyroid hormones stimulate different types of cells to perform their specific functions, such as protein synthesis, water balance, and many other physiological processes. Without iodine, this would not be possible. †

Iodorol®

High Potency Iodine/Potassium Iodide Supplement

Iodoral® is a Tablet form of Lugol solution and is available in 2 strengths

»  12.5mg/Tablet
»  50mg/Tablet

»  What makes Iodorol unique?

One 12.5 mg. tablet of Iodorol supplies an amount of total elemental iodine, comparable to the average daily intake of this essential element by mainland Japanese, a population with a very low prevalence of fibrocystic disease of the breast and breast cancer.

Iodine is an essential element. Although its main function is in the production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, other organs in the body have a need for iodine in order to function normally (4).

Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between low iodine intake and fibrocystic disease of the breast (FDB), both in women and laboratory animals (1,2). The minimum amount of iodine required for control and prevention of FDB is equivalent to 0.1mg/kg body weight/day. For example, for a 50 kg woman, the daily amount of iodine would be 5 mg. The thyroid gland needs iodide to function properly. The original study done 80 years ago to control goiter in adolescent girls used 9 mg iodide daily (3).

During the early 1900’s, the iodine/iodide solution called Lugol solution was used extensively, effectively and safely in medical practice, for both low activity and above normal activity of the thyroid gland (4). The recommended daily intake for iodine supplementation was 2 to 6 drops of Lugol solution containing 12.5 to 37.5 mg total iodide. That amount was mentioned as lately as 1995 in a book on Pharmaceutical Sciences (5). Several investigators have shown convincing evidence connecting inadequate iodine intake and breast cancer (6). Japanese women living in Japan consumed a daily average of 13.8 mg total elemental iodine and they experience one of the lowest prevalence (risk) for breast, ovarian and uterine cancer (6). In the 1960’s, one slice of bread in the USA contained the full RDA of 0.15 mg iodine. The risk for breast cancer was then 1 in 20 (7). Over the last 2 decades, iodine was replaced by bromine in the bread making process. Bromine blocks thyroid function and may interfere with the anticancer effect of iodine on the breast (4). Now, the risk for breast cancer is 1 in 8 and increasing 1% per year (7).

The RDA limits for vitamins and minerals were established after World War II. One of the last essential elements included in the RDA system was iodine, established in 1980 and confirmed in 1989 (8). The RDA for iodine was based on the amount of iodine/iodide needed to prevent goiter, extreme stupidity and hypothyroidism (9). The optimal requirement of the whole human body for iodine has never been studied. Therefore, the optimal amount of this element for physical and mental wellbeing is unknown. Based on demographic studies, the mainland Japanese consumed an average of 13.8 mg daily and they are one of the healthiest people on planet earth (6). Lugol solution is a time-tested preparation with a proven track record for over 150 years. Two drops contain 12.5 mg iodine/iodide, an amount very close to the 13.8 mg average intake of mainland Japanese.

»  Formulation

Administration of iodine/iodide in liquid solution is not very accurate, may stain clothing, has an unpleasant taste and causes gastric irritation. Iodoral® is a precisely quantified tablet form containing 5 mg iodine and 7.5 mg iodide as the potassium salt. To prevent gastric irritation, the iodine/iodide preparation was absorbed unto a colloidal silica excipient; and to eliminate the unpleasant taste of iodine, the tablets were coated with a thin film of pharmaceutical glaze (10).

»  Suggested Use

The suggested daily amount is 1-4 tablets/day as recommended by your physician. Work closely with your physician and natural healthcare provider while on the Iodoral® program. Report to your doctors any history of thyroid surgery and/or radiation, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto), and any previous problem with your thyroid. Before starting Iodoral®, your doctor will order blood tests for hematology, blood chemistry and thyroid functions. If you are taking thyroid hormones, let your physician know about it. Be aware that Iodoral® enhances the response of your body to thyroid hormones (4,6). Subjects on Iodoral® feel warmer in cold environments and that is expected. However, you will need to cut down the amount of thyroid hormones if you experience palpitation, anxiety, increased sweating and intolerance to heat. That is because Iodoral® decreases your need for thyroid hormones. Keep a record of what you observe while on Iodoral® and show it to your physician and natural healthcare provider.

To test whole body sufficiency for iodine, 4 tablets of Iodoral® are ingested, followed by 24 hr. urine collection. The more deficient a subject is in iodine, the more iodine is retained by the body and the least excreted in the urine. Sufficiency is achieved when 90% or more of the ingested amount is excreted in the urine. In most subjects tested, 3-4 tablets of Iodoral®/day were required to achieve whole body sufficiency within 3 months and the body retained approximately 1.5 gm iodine at sufficiency (4,8). The best response in patients with FDB was observed with ingestion of 2 tablets twice a day (8). Click Here to view or order an Iodine Loading test.

The Importance of Nutritional Counseling

Self diagnoses and treatment based solely on information found on the web or by word of mouth can be dangerous. For example, bodies can absorb up to a 300 percent difference in supplements, so a healthy dose for one, even a recommended dose on a package, can be toxic for another. Consultations are available to help you get the right supplements and the right dose for you. Once you begin the consultation process you will receive a complete supplement recommendation that will be tailored for your heath needs using expertise gained over 30 years in practice as a DC and NHD.

I recommend supplementation primarily with Standard Process brand products which are only legally available thru a doctor/patient relationship. If you find these products for sale on the internet; this is a violation of Standard Process guidelines. The products found on the internet are not guaranteed by Standard Process to have been stored properly and many are expired. We drop ship all Standard Process lab items directly from the company’s warehouse to your door, ensuring the freshest possible supplements arrive.

Plastic Surgery Down 62% – Here’s why!

DB here! I was listening to the weather and a news report was aired that the plastic surgery procedures are down 62% compared to the last couple of years. There is less augmentation and other cosmetic surgeries taking place right now.  Here’s what you can do to be one of the many who do not opt for these drastic procedures:

DR. Bob’s Tips For Your Skin

Healthy skin is an inside out PROCESS!!

· Take one tablespoon of flax oil per one hundred pounds. This is liquid sunshine, helping calcium get to your skin

· Cook with olive oil. Robin Swoboda puts it on her skin. Avoid Trans fat.

· Eat avocados, slice them on your salad, or smash them add some onion and tomatoes. Onions are a good source of sulfur which is also good for your skin

· Try some Burt’s Bee cream for your cuticles

· Read labels, avoid sodium lauryl sulfate.

· Take three or four calcium lactate supplements on an empty stomach

· Drink more water. At least a quart a day

· Eat walnuts for good oil

· Eat sesame seed for calcium

· Bell peppers are good for Vitamin C. Do not eat citrus when the temperature is less than sixty degrees (This is why they grow in the south)

· Avoid chlorine in pools and hot tubs. You want to get a shower de-chlorinator. You can take up to twelve milligrams of iodine a day. Try two or three kelp tablets to start.

The TV host went on to say the latest scientific research is strongly encouraging women only to use baby aspirin to avoid the bad effects associated with internal bleeding caused by taking stronger aspirin. Aspirin by the way causes long term can cause liver disease, and thin the blood so much it can be a factor causing stroke an intestinal bleeding.

I can save you some aggravation down the road so your skin will stay vibrant and elastic so you will not need the services of a cosmetic surgeon.

The number of advertisements for medications on TV, radio, magazines and the internet is actually overwhelming at times. There is a common prescription for asthma called Singular; the commentator said it is different than other asthma medications because it reduces the component that causes inflammation. I can tell you your goal is to stop inflammation before it will affect your lungs. In my Trans Fat Survival Guide I go into great detail in the Pain Game Chapter on how to avoid inflammation. Taking Flax oil and avoiding sugar goes a long way to prevent asthma. Dairy products are common factors resulting in asthma. I would not take any prescription that tricks the body. Go to www.druglessdoctor.com for more details a natural health. I have three ten minute videos on skin health. We also use a great product from GAIA herbs. DB

Torpedoes of Death = Donuts

DB here!! I had a busy day today; I was a guest on a radio program in 850 KOA AM with Rick Barber at 6am EST. We talked from items from soup to nuts. He liked my line “torpedoes of death”, those are donuts. Donuts create havoc on the gall bladder. The gall bladder is critical for optimal fat metabolism. Go to this site and see if you can upload the pod cast.

http://www.koaradio.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=overnight.xml

I was then on WTBQ, where I talked about Celtic Sea Salt. One nugget, maybe you will like to read. Men who have “bowed legs” often need minerals. Lack of minerals can be an issue. Leg cramps are common with lack of minerals. Go to my web site, either today or tomorrow, and register for my videos, and watch the one on Celtic Sea Salt. Download the outline. You will learn a lot. Only five percent of BP is caused by salt. There is a lot to learn. You can go to You Tube and type in Dr. Bob DeMaria discusses Celtic Sea Salt®. I will put the outline here for you to watch. Let me know how you like it. You know what; we have adjusted the price on Celtic Sea Salt. It is very important.

After I did the two radio programs, I spoke at Bendix a major World Wide company that is known by there air brakes. They were shocked to find out about “torpedoes of death”. I had several mature gentlemen come up to me after, and say they were very excited to learn they could lower their cholesterol and get off their drugs – most of them were suffering from the side effects with pain. Do you have high cholesterol; if yes go and read Dr. Bob’s ABC’s on my home page. I spoke for an hour. Great fun will go back next month. Thank you all the Bendix employees who were there today. Do you have a company that would like an excellent program, and then you may want to go to my home page, and link to the speaker form.

I had a workshop at noon. I have the notes and told you above how to see it until it gets posted. I can tell you Celtic Sea Salt® is critical for long term health. Let me know how you like it. DB

Celtic Sea Salt: Dr. Bob DeMaria

  • The history of salt. It has been used as a form of legal trade for thousands of years. Roman soldiers were paid with salt, “solarium argentums” which became the English word Salary.
  • Hippocrates used salt, infections, clearing congestion. It was said that w/o salt there would be no life.
  • The Union army used strategies in the Civil War to stop the South
  • Salt was used as a preservative before refrigeration. People moved to areas of salt, Cincinnati, Detroit and Cleveland. Utah
  • The Difference between Refined Salt and Unrefined Salt. Unrefined salt has over 80 minerals and elements. Refined salt has two Na and Cl
  • Sulfuric acid and chlorine in the form of brine are added to unrefined salt to take the other minerals out, which are classified as impurities. They then add anti-caking agents including sodium ferrocyanide, ammonium citrate and aluminum silicate. Dextrose is used as a stabilizer so that iodide will stay in the salt.
  • Refined salt is “lifeless”. Why you may ask? It can stay on the shelf longer. It is cleaner looking.
  • pH is effected by salt. We tend to live an acidic environment. Refined salt does not promote normal pH. Unrefined salt adds minerals helping normalize you pH. pH is a measure of acid (vinegar) or alkaline (baking soda)
  • The low salt diet does not promote normal blood pressure a low salt diet may help only 5% which is minimal. Chiropractic adjustment helps 17 points.
  • Could be salt sensitive. Kidney issues. Not common.
  • A low salt diet has been shown to cause multiple nutritional deficiencies, including depletion of minerals such as calcium and magnesium as well as potassium and B-vitamins.
  • Low salt diets often result in altered adrenal gland hormones, by increasing them, like adrenaline, which can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, raising BP and causing a heart attack. The purpose of Beta blockers is to stop these hormones. Could the low salt diet be the real problem? Insulin tends to increase on a low salt diet.
  • Elevated insulin has been associated diabetes, cysts on the ovaries and obesity.
  • A low salt diet can result in the increase of toxins in the body. Bromine.
  • Dr. Lepore ND, has found the systolic pressure will stabilize with Na and the diastolic pressure with K+
  • The amount of unrefined salt is directly related to the amount of water you consume. The more water you consume, the more unrefined salt you should ingest. Use ¼ teaspoon of unrefined salt for every quart of water ingested. Using it for cooking should not interfere with your BP.
  • The human body has 250 grams of salt in it a baby has 14 grams
  • Water and salt are necessary for metabolism, detoxification and transportation of nutrients as well as optimal functioning of the hormonal, nervous and immune systems.
  • Nerve impulses are mediated by sodium ions.
  • Sodium regulates the electrical charges through out the body. Seizure disorders can result with altered sodium levels. Seizures can be caused by diet soda and refined salt. They may go away by eliminating refined salt and add unrefined salt.
  • The brain needs magnesium, calcium and potassium to send messages.
  • Salt and water work together. Many today are dehydrated. Items with caffeine can accelerate water loss. You can have brain fog, which is very common w/o pure water and the proper minerals in unrefined salt.
  • Water generates energy. Two oceans in the body, one in the cells and one outside of the cells. The outside has WBC’s, RBC’s, vitamins and minerals. The inside ocean has all the cell organelles. Your body needs water and salt to carry the outside ocean water to the kidneys to be eliminated by the body.
  • Unrefined salt nourishes both oceans. Na is on the outside and the K is on the inside. Magnesium and calcium help the two oceans communicate with each other. They are not in unrefined salt.
  • When you do not have the right minerals you kidneys will start holding on to salt in the body.
  • Prolonged healthy salt deprivation will result to kidney problems. What will happen minerals will be pulled from inside the cells to balance the outside ocean?
  • You cannot drink enough water because the body needs minerals. As the cells become more dehydrated, waste products build up in the cells and you have acidosis.
  • The consequences of acidosis would include; cancer, auto immune disorders, and arthritis as well as accelerated aging.
  • The Adrenal glands are affected by salt. In a resting state, the adrenal glands are responsible for maintaining adequate energy levels, blood sugar control, blood pressure control, muscle strength and much more via the secretion of other hormones including: Aldosterone, cortisol, DHEA, Estrogen, Pregnenolone, Progesterone and Testosterone.
  • Adrenal gland exhaustion include fatigue, poor immune function, cancer, thyroid disorders, obesity, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, auto immune disorders and other chronic illness.
  • The Adrenal glands need Mg, it calms you.
  • Diuretics do not get to the cause. Do not stop w/o talking to your Dr.
  • Adrenal exhaustion results because of

1. The lack of unrefined salt in our diet

2. The excess use of refined salt in our diet.

More women are removing healthy breasts than ever

DB here!! One of the goals and passions in my life is to help people get the truth about health. I just read in the USA Today yesterday that women are opting to get their healthy breast taken off, when they have a tumor in the other one. The rate of increase for this type of surgery has risen from 4.2% in 1998 and 11% in 2003. They did not have current information as you can see there is six years since the last update, I am sure it is even higher now. In the article they said 25 of 542 women opted to have their breast taken off in the Hunt’s Study. There are three criteria for women to have their breast taken off. ONE: if a woman had more than one tumor in the original breast. TWO: If her original tumor started in the milk producing lobes but spread around like seeds around the breast instead of forming one solid lump. THREE: If she had a high risk according to a scale called the “Gail model”, which is the age of the patient when she had her first child and the family history of breast cancer. Now, I recognize this is a very personal situation, but I do want you to know from my experience, we have helped a lot of women who stabilized once they were told they had breast cancer by: supporting and cleansing the liver slowly, making sure there is enough iodine, eliminate sugar and toxic exposure to foods and environmental toxins.

I know sometimes this seems a little much, but what has happened in our society, is like the frog in the pot story. A frog will jump out of a hot boiling pot, but you can put it in warm water and slowly turn the heat up until it boils. We are living in the boiling point now in our society, and you/me/public are in the pot. The conventional medical thinkers for some reason do not tell or give their patients a strategy about what to and not to do. I can say that confidently because that is the norm. Patients are often given meds and told to go home. I would encourage you to go to a few areas and look relating to this blog. Watch the hormone, iodine and detoxification videos on m site. I would purchase “Dr. Bob’s Drugless Guide to Balancing Female Hormones”, read it, hi-lite it, and then read it again, then set up your strategy by following the Page Diet, and eating your apples, beets and carrots (ABC’s). My Detox book will be out soon, you need to get it, and follow the directions. The last thing you want to do is email me and ask for help because you have been told you have cancer. DB

Bell’s Palsy: How do you prevent and what do you take if you get it!!

DB here! I just received an email from someone who had a friend with Bells Palsy. This can be quite a scary condition; you basically wake up one morning with your face literally hanging.  Paralyzed!  If you do research on it you will get a lot of unknowns. I can tell you from my experience and with the knowledge of this person’s background that stress plays a significant role in the cause. I have found that stress uses up minerals. The one mineral I see more than any other includes calcium. I know during the winter time, there appears more calcium deficiencies, with resulting less calcium in tissues, because in the North the lack of sun. OK, here can be another challenge for some, and you will want to keep an eye on this, vitamin D usage can pull calcium from the intestines, and into the blood leaving little for the tissue. Make sure if you are taking vitamin D, you are also taking some calcium. A common body signal for a calcium deficiency would be itching skin. Going back to the Bells Palsy I would suggest as prevention would be to make sure you always have enough minerals, so use Celtic Sea Salt. In my practice we use the following Standard Process products for Bells Palsy: Calaplex E, Cataplex B, Calcium Lactate and Thymex. The stress that is occurring right now can be a challenge. DB

PS: I would suggest you may want to watch the videos I have on calcium. Do you have leg cramps at night? Get Poison Ivy? or Cold Sores? — If yes, get over there right now. Go to drugless media in the blue box on the home page, go to educational videos.

Slow the Aging Process, Fast! – Part 2

DB here!! OK, you read the earlier nugget and started drinking more water; right? I would not drink distilled water myself. It tends to deplete the body of critically needed minerals. You need minerals to assist the flax oil in making prostaglandin number three which takes away inflammation. I suggest you use Celtic Sea Salt® liberally (replace your conventional table salt). Vitamin C is very important for the creation of collagen. As you know or know now collagen is important for skin health.

I have found a source of vitamin C that will not cause cold sores or fibromyalgia: Are you ready for this? Red, yellow and orange bell peppers. Eat at least one half of one a red, yellow or orange bell pepper each day. Cut one up and put it in a sealed container along with your half of an apple, and four or five baby carrots. Do you want to know a little known nugget? Of course you do!  If you get indigestion with green bell peppers it may be that your gall bladder/liver mechanics are off. If this is the case you should be eating a half of an apple every day, or get some milk thistle or dandelion root from our web site (www.druglessdoctor.com). Those two items help the liver gall bladder flow. Now, this is really important: your skin needs collagen. Do you want to know a great source of collagen food precursor that you can get in the grocery store? Read the nugget tomorrow… :)

Eggs, NOT EGG NOG!

DB here!! Well it is the day before Christmas Eve and most are scurrying around trying to get some last minute food items and gifts I am sure. Traditionally we make a huge batch of scrambled eggs on Christmas morning. Eggs are a great source of sulfur and protein. The egg yolk has lecithin in it which emulsifies the fat and cholesterol, much like dishwashing detergent. We also fry up some chicken sausage. I would suggest organic chicken sausage. I would much rather you have eggs and sausage then pastries and doughnuts. I fondly call doughnuts, “torpedoes” of death. You can also poach eggs. They are really easy to do, drop a dash of vinegar in the water and plop the egg in, let in cook a minute or so. You will know when it is ready. I would not drink eggnog. You are drinking instant calories, 250 per cup. OK one last nugget. I am making Turkey for Christmas Eve; I will sauté onions and celery today for the stuffing I will mix together tomorrow morning. I boil the neck in reverse osmosis water, and use the water from the boiling to add to the stuffing. I am going to add some raisins tomorrow just for the heck of it, maybe grind a few walnuts. Did you get your chestnuts? I will be cooking up some of those also. Check out the video. One last thing, Debbie just did four videos on cooking. Click HERE to check them out. We have rice oil, which we can send to you. It is light and tastes great. Try something different to eat this Christmas time. How about some kale, cut it up, dash some olive oil in, and throw it into a frying pan that you all ready have onions and mushrooms sautéing. Let me know what you try. Sweet potatoes are also…..very tasty. DB

Thyroid Function

DB here!! Your thyroid is like the gas pedal to your car.  It turns up the heat by creating a demand on the rest of the body to perform.  Your thyroid need nutrients. A key nutrient is iodine.  If you have cold hands and feet you may in fact have low thyroid function.  Bromine, fluorine and chlorine are antagonistic to iodine.  Soy is anti-iodine.  Synthroid is not complete thyroid hormone.  It only has the T4 portion which needs to be converted to T3 a more active form of thyroid hormone.  Menopausal women have a greater chance to get osteoporosis because of synthetic thyroid meds.  Watch my video on iodine under the Drugless Media link on the homepage of www.DruglessDoctor.com or click HERE.  This is very serious.  Low thyroid function is one of the leading causes of constipation and breast cancer.  I would suggest if you have cold hands and feet, cysts on your breast and are tired you may want to have a thyroid assessment.
